The Blurting Method: How to Use It for A-Level Revision (Step-by-Step)

It's quick, it needs nothing but a pen and paper, and it's built on the most reliable finding in the science of learning. But here's the thing. Having watched hundreds of A-level students revise, I'd say about half of them do blurting in a way that quietly removes the entire benefit. So let's go through the full method, the mistakes, and how to make it part of a proper system rather than a party trick.

Why blurting works when re-reading doesn't
Here's the trap every student falls into at some point. You read your notes, they look familiar, and your brain files "familiar" as "known". Then the exam asks you to produce that content from nothing, and you discover that recognising information and retrieving it are two completely different skills. You've been training the wrong one. And I promise you, that moment in the exam hall when the book is closed and nothing comes out? It hurts. We've all been there.
The fix has a name in the research: retrieval practice, sometimes called the testing effect. The act of pulling information out of memory strengthens the memory itself, far more than another read-through ever could. It's one of the most repeated results in learning science. Medical students, who face some of the heaviest information loads of any course, revise almost entirely this way. It's how I got through medical school myself.
Blurting is simply retrieval practice with the lowest possible setup cost. A pen, a blank page, and a closed set of notes.
How to blurt, step by step
- Pick one topic, not a whole unit. "The heart and circulation" is a topic. "Biology paper 1" is not. If it can't fit on one page of recall, it's too big.
- Study it briefly, 5 to 10 minutes. Read your notes or the textbook section with full attention. You're loading it in, not memorising it word for word.
- Close everything. Notes shut, textbook shut, phone in another room. This step is the whole method. If the notes stay open, you're just copying.
- Blurt for 5 to 10 minutes. On a blank page, write everything you can remember. Facts, diagrams, equations, mechanisms, connections. Messy is fine. Order doesn't matter. And keep going past the first moment you feel done. That extra minute of straining is where the strengthening happens.
- Check in a different colour. Open your notes and compare. Add everything you missed or got wrong in red. Be honest with yourself here. Vague counts as missed.
- Re-blurt the red. Take five minutes, now or later the same day, and blurt just the bits you missed. This closes the loop that most students leave open.

The five mistakes that make blurting useless
- Peeking. One glance at your notes mid-blurt turns retrieval practice back into copying. If you're stuck, sit with the discomfort for another thirty seconds. Struggling and then finding the answer in the check phase is exactly how the memory gets stronger.
- Blurting straight after reading, once, and never again. Recall five minutes after studying is easy and proves very little. The gains come from blurting the same topic tomorrow, then in three days, then in a week, when your brain has actually started forgetting.
- Topics that are too big. Blurting "all of organic chemistry" produces a page of fragments and a feeling of despair. Blurting "nucleophilic substitution mechanisms" produces a usable gap-map.
- Treating the blurt page as notes. The page is a diagnostic. Its job is to tell you what to restudy. Don't decorate it, don't file it, don't rewrite it neatly. That's low-yield work in disguise.
- Only blurting facts. A-level marks live in connections and applications. Mechanisms, evaluations, multi-step methods. Blurt those too. "Explain why", not just "list what".
Turning a technique into a system
Blurting tells you how to revise a topic. It doesn't tell you which topic to revise today, or when each topic should come back. And that scheduling question is where most revision actually falls apart. The research answer is spaced repetition: reviewing each topic at increasing intervals (day 1, day 2, day 4, day 7 and so on), which times each review for the moment just before you'd forget it.

Yes, with a small tweak. For maths, blurt the method: write out the steps, formulas and worked structure for a topic from memory, then do a past paper question cold.
